Outside time allows infants and toddlers to extend their exploration and play to an outdoor setting. In this five-week online course, learners will apply the ingredients of active learning to the outdoor environment, choose materials and equipment to support infant and toddler development during outdoor play, and identify adult-child interaction strategies that scaffold infants’ and toddlers’ learning during outside time.
By the end of this learning event, learners will be able to:
- Identify strategies to incorporate active learning at outside time.
- Identify materials and equipment to support infants and toddlers during outside time.
- Identify and describe supportive adult-child interactions during outside time.
Learner Requirements:
Learners must complete all assignments within the learning event’s timeframe. This includes weekly learning units, reading assignments, Check My Understanding quizzes, discussion posts, and Try It Out assignments. Learners must pass each Check My Understanding with a minimum of 80% or higher and achieve a total overall score for the learning event of 80% or higher for full credit.
Online instructional activities may be started and stopped at the participant’s leisure over each week, allows learners to complete coursework combined along with and informed by teaching. Learners will need access to a computer with sound and internet access to complete weekly assignments. It is recommended to use the Google Chrome internet browser when navigating through the course. Learners will also need access to an infant-toddler classroom to complete discussion and Try It Out assignments.

- Course Registration closes two weeks before classes start. Late registrations cannot be accepted.
- If paying by PO, please complete online registration for all of your participants, and send in a copy of your web order with your PO to fulfillment@highscope.org.
- Participants will receive their welcome email with login instructions 1-2 days before class starts.
- Please provide a current email address to enable course communication.
- HighScope will grant refunds (minus the cost of student materials) to students only if they withdraw from the course prior to its start. Cancellation must be received by email to fulfillment@highscope.org.
