Course Description:
This online course provides hands-on experience in observing, recording, and evaluating preschool classroom quality using HighScope’s Classroom Coach.
Classroom Coach is a comprehensive classroom assessment that reflects new science about learning, is compatible with all curricula, and provides programs with:
- Guidance for providing teacher training aimed at increasing student outcomes,
- Activities for content areas like literacy and math as well as activities for family engagement,
- A Coaching Report that helps classroom staff develop a quality improvement plan, and
- An easy-to-use classroom materials checklist.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this course participants will know and be able to:
- Use data collection techniques to gather evidence in a preschool classroom,
- Write objective evidence, &
- Score each item reliably using collected evidence.
Logistics:
HighScope courses use a variety of weekly online activities (including reading assignments, Check My Understanding quizzes, and discussion posts) that are estimated to take 2–3 hours of time per week. You must complete all assignments on time and achieve 80% of total possible course points to receive credit for the course. We recommend that you log in early in the week to get your assignments so you can plan for your work.
Breakdown:
Reading Assignments: approx. 45 min/week
Check My Understanding Quizzes: approx. 15 min/week
Discussion Posts: approx. 30 min/week
- Course Registration closes two weeks before class starts. Late registrations cannot be accepted.
- HighScope will grant refunds (minus the cost of student materials) to students only if they withdraw from the course prior to its start. Cancellations must be received by email (press@highscope.org).
Technology Information:
Virtual users will need a computer with internet access and the ability to listen to audio either through internal or external computer speakers. Virtual users will also need the capability to participate in weekly Zoom calls, either via the Zoom app or via the Zoom website (www.zoom.us). To participate fully in the weekly Zoom calls, you will need microphone capabilities through an internal or external computer microphone or telephone. If you want your peers and facilitator(s) to see you during these calls, you can use your computer’s built-in camera or another video device (e.g., external webcam) or you can use your mobile device.
