Problem Solving and Conflict Resolution - Two Day Introduction

  • June 22–23, 2016

Getting along and sharing space and materials with other children are learned behaviors just like learning how to tie your shoe or to write your name. In this two-day workshop we will approach conflict situations as opportunities for preschool children to learn and practice important social skills. During day one, participants will examine the pros and cons of typical adult styles for dealing with preschool conflicts and learn HighScope’s six steps to conflict resolution. As we dissect the six steps, we will use reframing strategies to help clarify children’s feelings, wants and needs. During day two we will discuss conflict prevention strategies. We will draw distinctions between natural, logical, and punitive consequences, and use I statements to set positive limits for children.

Objectives include:

  • Approach conflict situations as opportunities for children to learn important social skills.
  • Use the 6 steps to help children resolve problems.
  • Use strategies to prevent conflicts in the classroom
  • Set positive limits
