Kellogg Racial Equity 2030

First Steps: Advancing Racial Equity in Michigan Early Childhood Education

Breaking News

We are still adding partners to our project! First Children’s Finance is coming on board to provide business consultations, financial analysis, and technical assistance services to our participants as they move through the program. Their assistance will help create solid early childhood learning programs throughout the state.

Across America, there is a lack of diversity in teaching and administrative roles that leads to racial inequities in classrooms. First Steps: Advancing Racial Equity in Michigan Early Childhood Education will see a partnership with HighScope, Eastern Michigan University, and eight school districts focused on changing racial inequities in early childhood education. Based on our successful Texas model, the San Antonio Hub of Excellence, we will provide pathways for Black and brown teachers to become teacher leaders/business owners in early childhood education, creating economic stability for themselves and their communities while providing racial equity and healing.

The partners will provide opportunities to obtain bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degrees while gaining work experience without acquiring the large debt some experience. Also, the schools will have racial equity trainings and parents/guardians of students of color will attend racial healing focus groups to facilitate open communication in support of their children.
