Numbers Plus Preschool Mathematics Curriculum

HighScope offers publications and training options covering early math. Under a $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education, HighScope has developed the Numbers Plus® Preschool Mathematics Curriculum in consultation with noted early mathematics researchers and program developers.

Numbers Plus, like other HighScope math materials, is aligned with the early childhood standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). Teachers use Numbers Plus to conduct small- and large-group activities and other math-related experiences throughout the daily routine.

The Numbers Plus Curriculum Set

The Numbers Plus Preschool Mathematics Curriculum provides mathematical learning that is sequenced within activities. Each activity has a built-in progression so children of different developmental and ability levels can participate together and have a positive and meaningful learning experience. Each of the 120 activities provided in Numbers Plus include a materials list, step-by-step plans, developmental charts, and follow-up suggestions to extend mathematics learning in all areas of the classroom and throughout the day. The activities in Numbers Plus are divided into five content areas:

  • Number Sense and Operations
  • Geometry
  • Measurement
  • Algebra
  • Data Analysis

The Numbers Plus Preschool Mathematics Curriculum also includes a teacher's manual. This manual clearly explains early mathematics development and provides adults with many strategies they can use to help children build skills and construct mathematical knowledge through active participatory learning.

Family Engagement

The everyday experiences children have in the early years with math — from building with blocks to making an alternating row of pretzels and raisins to picking matching socks from the drawer — will help prepare them for later learning about topics such as geometry, algebra, and data analysis. Math is all around us and parents use it every day along with children. The English-Spanish booklet, Helping Your Young Child Learn About Mathematics provides many everyday activities parents can use at home to give their children the mathematics skills to succeed in school and in life. There are 25 of these booklets included in the Numbers Plus Curriculum Set. Additional copies can be ordered here.

Math Materials

Each activity of the Numbers Plus Preschool Mathematics Curriculum includes a materials list. HighScope has partnered up with Discount School Supply® to create a Numbers Plus Math Materials Kit (pictured below). Click here to learn more.

Training

HighScope's offerings include training for Numbers Plus. During training, you will learn about important math concepts in the number sense and operations, geometry, measurement, algebra and data analysis. We will cover how to scaffold children's math learning using specific interaction strategies. We will also discuss how to add materials to your classroom to support children's math learning. Online training and 2-day workshops are available. Please contact 734.485.2000, Ext. 224 or Ext. 268; e-mail [email protected]; or visit our training page.
